Update #15-9: A New Beginning!

September 29, 2015 by brianwagner

A new school year is well underway and we’re excited for what this year holds. Over the last few weeks, we’ve welcomed 100 new students to RVA holding passports from 17 different nations around the world including: Norway, Taiwan, USA, Singapore, Kenya, DRC, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, South Korea, China, South Africa, UK, Netherlands and Paraguay. The majority of their parents are ministering in 29 different countries on the African continent. How EXCITING to be part of God’s work in Africa!

Here’s a quick look at our term ahead:

RACHEL had 5 wonderful weeks with Camp BlueSky here in Kenya during her summer break. We enjoyed spending time together as a family. While here, she “adopted” an orphaned elephant named Ndotto! Rachel has started her junior year at Millersville University and is continuing her studies in social work and sociology. This will be her second year both as an RA and as a member of the leadership team for Navigators (NAVs). She is also excited to be co-leading a Bible study this semester.

HANNAH has a full schedule as she starts her 11th grade year! Along with some difficult classes, she is singing in the high school choir, playing flute in our wind ensemble, mentoring five 7th grade girls as a Junior High Rock counselor, and serving as the manager of a Banquet committee. Hannah loves getting out into our local community and is involved in a Sunday morning street ministry in the town of Mai Mahiu. She also went down to the IDP camp in the valley during Outreach Day to play with kids!

MICAH is thoroughly plugged into the high school world now that he is in 9th grade! He is excited to be the starting goal keeper for our JV soccer team and is playing the trumpet in our wind ensemble. Micah was elected as chairman of the 9th grade class this year and works closely with other elected officers in organizing and running activities for their monthly class nights.

In addition to keeping up with our kids both near and far, Brian is teaching two classes of AP Calculus, heading the math department, working on curriculum development, organizing this year’s Interim trips, and moving RVA forward in our re-accreditation process so that we will be ready for a visiting team of educators from the Middle States Association in May 2016. Missy is working as RVA’s admissions director, accompanying the high school choir, teaching and mentoring 9th grade girls on Sunday mornings, and sponsoring the 9th grade class with Brian and three other couples. We are both looking forward to helping Hannah’s class with preparations for their Junior/Senior Banquet in February!

We would appreciate your prayers for our staff and students as we look forward to RVA’s annual Spiritual Emphasis Week which will be held October 14-18. This year’s theme is “Living a Surrendered Life”. PRAY for hearts ready to receive teaching from the Word. PRAY for the speaker and worship team coming from the US. PRAY for God to work and move among our campus. PRAY against distractions, illness, and other ways that Satan might try to diminish the work of God’s Spirit in us.

Thanks for being a part of God’s work in Africa!
